Mission in Italy

Introduction

"You will be my witnesses to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8). The mission of CIC, envisioned long ago to serve as witnesses, has continuously adapted to the changing needs of the times. With a particular focus on the development of the African mission, the Superior General Rev. Sr. Josephine Alphonse and the Assistant General Rev. Sr. Alphonse Fatima initiated CIC’s mission in Italy, with Rome, the heart of the Catholic Church and the seat of the papacy, as its capital.

On October 8, 1998, the first CIC mission site in Italy was established in the town of Casorate Primo, in the Archdiocese of Milan, the largest archdiocese in the world, with a population of around fifteen thousand. Three sisters — Sr. Annal Jayakumari, Sr. Amali Victoria, and Sr. Dayapari Vasantha — responded to the call within the call, setting the foundation for CIC’s presence in Italy.

Through the holiness and dedication of saints, missionaries, and archbishops, deep faith and divine love flourished in Italy. However, over time, many individuals have become disconnected from the spiritual roots, prioritizing worldly pleasures over sacred commitments like marriage, leading to moral degradation. The search for peace of mind has grown among the people, while the number of religious vocations has significantly declined, resulting in the closure of seminaries and convents. Many young people now question the purpose of a religious vocation. Parents, preoccupied with work and the pursuit of wealth, often lack the time or resources to guide their children toward becoming faithful Christians.

CIC’s mission, inspired by the sacrifices of missionaries sent to India — such as St. Francis Xavier, St. John de Britto, and other saints — continues to uphold the transformative legacy of sharing the Good News. Many of these missionaries lived their lives in India with unwavering faith, knowing that "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13). These missionaries did not return to their homeland, and their sacrificial work is an enduring example for CIC, as the mission continues to send missionaries to European countries today.

Current Mission Work

CIC’s mission in Europe has evolved over time, transitioning from an era of self-sacrifice for the Gospel to a more focused approach on strengthening the faith of Christians. The mission now emphasizes helping believers remain steadfast in their faith, nurturing them into vibrant, loving families of faith that can sustain and share the Gospel in their communities.
